Bret Michaels had emergency surgery after a performance July 19th in Spokane, Washington, and has been instructed by doctors to take three to four weeks off from touring.
Michaels suffered acute kidney pain during or after the show and doctors performed surgery to insert a stent into Michaels’ kidney. The stent is scheduled to be removed in about four weeks, after which Michaels will hopefully be cleared to return to the stage.
Doctor’s noted that this procedure requires a strict regimen of hydration while eleminating most physical activity, warning that the type of physical performance Michaels does on stage could lead to a displacement of the stent requiring immediate medical attention.
The sometimes frontman for Poison — the group he founded in the mid-1980s and still occasionally tours with — has long battled Type 1 Diabetes, which decreases immune response and complicates recovery from any kind of surgery.
Michaels released the following message to his fans:
“I’m forever grateful for the amazing medical treatment and ongoing medical attention throughout my personal life and career, and truly grateful for family, friends, fans, band, crew and promoters for their understanding and, if all goes well, will hit the road late August back to delivering 1000% energy, intensity and truly nothing but a good time.”
